What does "Alliance Help" do?

Just joined an alliance and was pretty excited about the alliance help button, thinking that it would decrease the timer everytime someone helped, or that a percentage would be subtracted when 8/8 people helped, but nothing happened when both scenarios played out. So what is it for? What does it really do?

Every time a member of your alliance helps you it take a few seconds off your timer, and every time you help them it does the same thing for them. It is cost free so you should do it every time you can.
